Description
Crawl is a short video done in a single-take. A woman in a red shirt and black capri jeans with bare feet inches her way through the dirt and gravel in a fissure or ditch below a broken cement surface. The tight shot makes it difficult to know if we are looking into a wall or down from a bird’s eye view, until the woman emerges at the other end. The sounds of construction equipment can be heard in the background.

Crawl est une courte vidéo réalisée en une seule prise. Une femme vêtue d’une chemise rouge et d’un jean capri noir, pieds nus, se fraye un chemin dans la terre et le gravier d’une fissure ou d’un fossé sous une surface de ciment brisée. Le plan serré fait qu’il est difficile de savoir si nous regardons dans un mur ou vers le bas à partir d’une vue d’oiseau, jusqu’à ce que la femme émerge à l’autre bout. Des bruits d’engins de chantier se font entendre en arrière-plan.
Statement
Crawl was a spontaneous response to a real-life situation. Karen and her partner were renovating a new studio that was previously an industrial building. They were doing much of the demolition work themselves. The work was difficult and the project seemed to be endless. One day, in a gesture that recalls the tradition of endurance performance art, where artists put their bodies through some form of hardship, Karen asked her partner if he would film her crawling through a trench they were making in order to locate the plumbing. Not until the end of the video when she stands up and walks out the front door into the light of the day, does the viewer understand that the artist has been pulling herself through a trench.

Crawl est une réponse spontanée à une situation réelle. Karen et son partenaire étaient en train de rénover un nouveau studio qui était auparavant un bâtiment industriel. Ils effectuaient eux-mêmes une grande partie des travaux de démolition. Le travail était difficile et le projet semblait sans fin. Un jour, dans un geste qui rappelle la tradition des performances d’endurance, où les artistes soumettent leur corps à une forme d’épreuve, Karen a demandé à son partenaire s’il accepterait de la filmer en train de ramper dans une tranchée qu’ils étaient en train de creuser afin de localiser la tuyauterie. Ce n’est qu’à la fin de la vidéo, lorsqu’elle se lève et sort par la porte d’entrée à la lumière du jour, que le spectateur comprend que l’artiste s’est tirée dans une tranchée.
